Boxers

Hughes_080307_0046_master_2 Last week, I returned from attending Sports Shooter Academy V in Irvine, Ca. Along with everything else I learned, I fell in love artistically with boxing halls. The smell of sweat, the intensity of emotion and the primal action transcends sport to speak more of the human condition. I think this could turn into a long term project. It was also nice to leave all the gear behind in the car and carry only one body and a wide angle zoom lens.

After a couple of weeks on the road, it has been great to spend some time at home with the girls. In a couple of weeks, I am back at it. Look for some postings from  Monterey!

That Time Again!

Hughes_080217_0016_master_web_2 Long time no post! Although I have not been shooting a lot over the winter, I have been quite busy with other photo related projects. I have done quite a bit of traveling including Chile, Seattle, Toronto and a bunch of other places. Well, bicycle racing season is here again and, like last year, I am warming up doing some shooting at a local training race series. I am finalizing my race coverage schedule for the summer and first up is Sea Otter. Posts should be much more frequent now.

Drying Out

Hughes_071201_0079_web_2Wow! Quite a weekend here in Portland. Probably the harshest shooting conditions I have yet shot in. I wanted epic but that was rediculous. The racing was incredible. Trebon and Johnson battling it out. I am here for one more day doing the tourist thing and visiting with friends. I am ready to go home but I can't wait to come back. Now the biggest question is with the weather, will my flight will be on time?

One More Time

Hughes_071117_0373_webI'm getting ready to head back up to the USGP in New Jersey. With a beautiful venue, decent sized crowds and fast racing, the first day of the Mercer Cup was a success. For me, some good shooting but maybe a touch to far to drive back home from last night, just to get up this morning and do it again. I was excited to see a sand pit and fly over, Belgian style. It made me feel that I was at a Super prestige event. Trebon was flying yesterday, let's see if he can do it again today.

O.K. You Caught Me!

Hughes_071110_0276_webIt you looked earlier this week, you may have noticed that I changed the shot in the previous post. It was kind of driving me crazy that the title of the post didn't really match the image. So here is the shot of Matt Kraus attacking the loose short climb before the stair run-up. The shoot I was assisting on got postponed, so I am trying to catch up on lots of busy work.

Shooting at the Beach

Hughes_071110_0194_web I posted this shot from Beacon cross up on cyclingnews.com but I liked it so much I thought I would post it here as well. I was hoping to go to Highland Park today but next week is shaping up to be a busy one and I have some post-production work to get done here. Beacon Cross ended up being a very exciting race to shoot. With much of the action being in the woods, most of the shooting is in the "Amphitheater of Pain". Fortunately the race passes through there twice each lap, so I find myself running between a couple of spots trying to keep up. Here, race winner Davide Frattini leads the break across the sand. No gallery yet but I will post it here. Wissahickon is up, so you can always check that out. Next weekend is a big one at the USGP in New Jersey.

Busy Times

Fhughes_071020_0039_web Things are busy these days. I just got back from a nine day job on the west coast and this weekend I am shooting the Granogue and Wissahickon cyclocross races here in the good old Mid Atlantic. Granogue is the traditional kick off to the Verge MAC series and yesterdays' race was as exciting as always. Tim Johnson took his first victory here, beating a strong field featuring the likes of Jeremy Powers, Barry Wicks and Jesse Anthony. He was also sporting a new kit with his name emblazoned on his back. This trend in kits looks really sharp. Particularly for cyclocross. I have always thought it was a great way to help fans spot their favorite riders. No gallery yet but I will have it up soon.

Jumping Back On

Hughes_070923_0174_web_2 Cross! Yeah, it's here again. I truly  love this sport. Love to race it. Love to shoot it. It is kind of a bitter sweet feeling not to be racing this year for the first time in a long time. I do miss the feeling of nailing a barrier section or the flow of a perfect hot lap. The Charm City Cross starts the Mid-Atlantic race season. It also starts a busy two and a half months for me. Lots of weekends on the road and I hope lots of posts.

Hitting the road again

Hughes_070908_0075_web_2A nice day of shooting up in Souderton PA at the Univest Grand Prix. After a long hiatus, it was great to shoot some road racing again. I got some shots published out of it too. Cross season is coming up quick. Only two more weeks. It's gong to be a busy fall.
